A spectacular Sunday afternoon was the backdrop for the BSHS Rowing Program’s boat naming ceremony. The newly christened ‘Centenary’ was officially welcomed into the Rowing Program fleet by Mr Haynes, Executive Principal, Mr Cameron Stephenson, Rowing MIC with special guests Amy MacMahon MP, Member for South Brisbane and BSHS Rowing Alumni, as well as a motivating speech by four-time Olympian, and three-time Olympian rowing medalist, and fellow BSHS Rowing Alumni, Bo Hanson.  

A fantastic gathering of students, parents, committee members, alumni, staff, volunteers and supporters enjoyed the afternoon in the dappled light of the mangroves in front of the of the Riverside Drive rowing sheds. This community turn out is testimony to the commitment and connection to this wonderfully inclusive sport, as both Amy and Bo recounted their passion for the sport. In their experience highlighted that coming with sporting prowess or stature were not necessarily an indicator of success. Rowing success comes in many forms – life-long friendships, a legacy of commitment to crew and most importantly community spirit in spades.  With $4000 remaining to pay for ‘Centenary’, two generous rowing families will match donations to pay the final instalment. Heartfelt thanks to these ‘oar-some’ members of the community. Donations are still gratefully accepted and can be organised with Mrs Jenn Johnson, Rowing Chair.

Congratulations to Mr Stephenson, Mrs Johnson, the amazing Rowing Sub-Committee and all involved in acquiring this state-of-the-art vessel. Now with two eight boats, the Blue-Red-Blue fleet will no doubt be leveling up and giving rivals something to watch for in the water. 

Our best wishes for clear water and favorable conditions at this weekends’ Head of the River Girls Regatta 2021. Good luck to all our crews this Saturday!
